Why I Support Paul Hackett

Cross-posted from Ohio 2nd Blog

There's a lot of negativity on the blogosphere over the Brown Hackett Senate race. Maybe I'm a part of the problem. It's not enough to just be mad at things, you've got to be for something.

I support Paul Hackett over Sherrod Brown for Senate. Here's why:

Iraq

We need new voices on Iraq. We need vision. When Paul Hackett talks about Iraq people listen. We need that. Hackett is saying the same thing as millions of frustrated Americans who want us out of there. But here's saying it from the perspective of someone who's lived it. That gives it strength. We need change. Paul Hackett can make that happen.

Untouchable

Since Paul Hackett has walked the walk many of the Republican slime machine's best attacks don't work. It's like he's bullet proof. B.S. bounces off of him. He's rubber and they're glue. He's not just talking about things, he's lived it. He's lived their stupidity. He's lived their failures. That makes him a big threat to Republicans.

Guns

Guns is a huge wedge issue for Mike DeWine. The NRA is already talking about targetting him. Paul Hackett can exploit that wedge. I've never shot a gun in my life. I hate gun violence but I know that the way to reduce violence is good jobs. We won't reduce the violence by just complaining.

Cross-over votes

Hackett's credibility on Iraq, support of gun rights and overall straight talking make him a powerful cross-over candidate. When we get a new voter we swing things one vote. When we get a Republican to vote for us we swing two votes. Paul Hackett can earn those Republican votes. I've watched him do it.

Leadership

Paul Hackett inspires people to act. The Democratic county parties in the 2nd district are energized because of him. It's hard to quantify leadership. You can't just start a blog and expect thousands of people to dump money on you. Paul Hackett inspired people to do that.

It's More Then Being Right

Democrats have been right and lost for so long it's just sad. Sherrod Brown is very right. But will he win? I'm tired of being right and losing. I'm tired of being a victim. We need fresh blood. We need to jumpstart things. It's more than about complaining about the opposition and pointing to your voting record. Losing a vote shouldn't be something to put on your resume. We need action. We need leadership. We need something fresh, as James Caville said during the special. Paul Hackett does that.

Sherrod Brown is a great Congressman and he'd make a great Senator. I just support Paul Hackett more. No matter who wins the nomination I'll be proud to support them.

Have the county chairmen indicated any support for Hackett during this controversy?  The SE counties were key to the almost upset so I would be very interested on their take on this matchup.  They are the people on the ground that will have to help the candidate, what are they saying?  Their voices are missing and that is truly unfortunate.

Untouchable (none / 0)

I do like the untouchable thing. We already know what they are going to throw at Hackett. The whole "he never saw combat" thing, to bad that was proven false. Hackett did see combat. We know they will call him inexperienced, and how to counter that.

Hackett and Casey are the best two pick up possible I think.

I would add from what I have read (none / 0)

that he appears progressive on a lot of the same issues except for guns as Brown- so I am not exactly sure that this is an issues debate as much as people who are pro brown want to make it. I think it comes down to which personality you think has a better chance of winning.

I Am Trying To Understand This Hackett Deal. (none / 0)

See, I am in Massachusetts, where most politicians either look good, bad or, in most cases, like grinning Cheshire cats. It's damn confusing. I don't have gun and such, but I really do not sweat the gun issue, except when the jackals at the NRA start pushing those scary "shoot first" laws. They must want to re-start the damn civil war.

Besides, it's the other guys making a bigger deal out of the gun issue, not the voters.

i am guessing you are not a hunter? i use to hunt as a kid- so i get the points about guns. the fear is the slippery slope argument- which  is a fallacy, but an understandable concern given the nature of our heavily regulated society (when compared to other societies that is)

amen! Your last paragraph is the KEY (3.00 / 1)

Your last paragraph is probably the most important on Paul Hackett. If only enough Brown supporters would step back & REALIZE this point.

There's No doubt that Sherrod Brown is a great Democrat & has an excellent voting record.

Unfortunately, there are realities in the world of politics that cannot be ignored.

One, Ohio is as Red as you can get.( based on election results in the last 8-10 years) All Statewide offices held by Republicans. No Democratic Statewide success story to speak of in the last 10 years. Both Gore & Kerry lost the state. In other words, Ohio is solid Red & tilted to the right.

Two, Brown's voting record & his proud 90% Liberal Rating from Liberal Watchdog groups will DEFINITELY be a LIABILTY in the General Election.

This will be HIGHLIGHTED DAY & NIGHT 24/7 by conservative Ohio voters thru Millions of Dollars of RNC,RCCC & the Right Wing Noise Machine.

The ONLY reason that there is SO MUCH clamor for Brown to run for office among the Dem base of the party is due to the LATEST Polls showing a weak Dewine.

But Any knowledgeable & Experienced Political junkie knows that Poll numbers taken one year before election day ALMOST MEANS NOTHING!

I can promise you that this race WILL BE MUCH MORE COMPETITIVE than some Democrats think it will be. Why do I say this?

  1. A Built in larger Republican voter base Advantage

  2. The power of Incumbency. The GOP control everything. This is huge advantage on  any election. From Taft to BLackwell.

  3. Much stronger State GOP Organizationt than the State Democratic Party Organization.

  4. A more conservative group of State Voters regardless if they are Independents, Republicans or Democrats.

  5. A united GOP that will SPEND MILLIONS to Label Brown as "Too Liberal" for Ohio.

In conclusion, Why would we EVEN RISK sending a candidate who happens to be a Liberal in such a conservative Red State were we have had very little success. He couldn;t beat Taft before & he will have a tough time winning over Independent voters  who are more conservative than he is

Are we trying to win this thing or are we just sending a symbolic progressive message.

Paul Hackett is a the strongest candidate for this race.

Stronng, period (none / 0)

Not only is Paul progressive on the issues, he is strong, proud and has conviction-not wishy washy.  All of this, with his energy, draws the support.  In all their polls showing weakness on DeWine, if you put a lightweight against him, what do you think will happen?

I'm not jumping on the ABD (Anybody but DeWine)wagon again.  I want the real thing.  Besides, aren't we supposed to be ADDING SEATS, not just shuffling them around?  A government FOR the people and BY the people.
